Nook Notes; Autumn Drift
It’s been a busy hush.
I know, an odd phrase, but that’s exactly how the last few weeks have felt. Guests come, creativity flares, then the silence settles again, soft as dust motes in the rafters.
The first bit of joy: a recent guest slipped an elegant Brontë-era figurine onto the library shelves. She’s keeping watch over Austen and Tolstoy. She fits so perfectly I had to count the books twice to spot her. What a beautiful gesture right? When a guest leaves US a gift. (Bonus- this month, everybody won super clean brownie points- which is always a sigh of relief).
Then the texts.
“One labyrinth door knocker found; how did we miss it last night?” (You remind me of the babe…)
Followed by another: “Pretty sure I’ve nailed Hedwig’s Theme on your kettle drum.”
No audio clip, just pure excitement in words. That childlike wonder? It’s contagious. I catch myself grinning at my phone like a fool. Inside, the new kettle drum is everyone’s darling. Its gentle, space-age thrum fills the high ceiling so beautifully I half-expect the beams to sing back. Paired with our soundbar, the acoustics feel… well, a little bit magic.
A quick note for anyone still wondering: Is the old church creepy? We do get asked this sometimes. Simply, no. The sun pours through the tall windows from dawn, turning the nave into a warm wash of gold. Locals have loved this place for over a century. We keep the energy light; think feather, not fog.
Outside, Autumn turned the garden into a quilt. Greens flipped to amber overnight, then deep burgundy, and now those leaves drift down onto grass that’s finally greening after the driest summer in years. Magnolias? Came and went in a blink. Always do. They’re polite like that: breathtaking, brief, gone.
We also polished the pamper packs. Complimentary slippers, luxe goodies, a note that basically says, “Slow down, you’re here.”
There’s plunge and pod coffee waiting, a picnic hamper in the pantry, and a fireplace ready for that first whoosh of flame. Bring groceries you love—our chef kitchen can handle anything from midnight brownies to slow lamb Sunday.
Who’s been visiting? Writers knocking out chapter outlines, painters chasing morning light, sewing groups spreading bright fabric across the altar-long table, couples hiding from the world on romantic weekends, and more than a few book lovers determined to read, nap, repeat. Some guests come just to sleep. Honestly, I’d call that a win.
I’ll be back later this week, enjoying the crackle of the log in the hearth, fluffing doonas, lining up fresh towels, andmaking sure the clawfoot tub gleams like a promise. If you’re the next to unlock the door, welcome in advance. Text me when you find a hidden gem; I live for those messages.
Until then, may your coffee stay hot, your ideas messy, and your autumn days dipped in just the right shade of red.
PS- What are you reading? Mine is Lola in the Mirror. Finished it under the big tree with a Limoncello Spritz. Highlyrecommend the combo.
